Cancer and Me (a patients story)
Are you going to the doctors? Asked my wife June every week no was my reply every week, too busy, haven’t got the time, and can’t be bothered. Eventually to my dismay she made me an appointment.
I told the doctors I was getting up in the night once or twice for a pee, otherwise I was feeling OK, he examined me said feels fine but will send you for a scan to be sure.
I had tests, scans, X-rays, by the dozen at Rotherham General Hospital, went back the week after for the results. I am afraid its Prostate Cancer the consultant said and it’s began to spread. I was numb, shocked, terrified, frightened how could it be me! I had only run a half marathon the previous year; I was fit working full time, no pain.
Eventually the prognosis started to sink in, I had got cancer and I had to deal with it as best I could.
I returned to Rotherham they could not operate I was transferred to the Hallamshire. I went through all the tests again, they gave me various options of treatments, and I opted for surgery.
I went into the Hallamshire on Thursday had the operation on Friday, a five hour operation they told me. I came home on the Tuesday complete with catheter etc. After a couple of weeks the catheter was removed and I started to re-cuperate. I was given the opportunity to take early retirement and I did; now my life is fairly normal. I have regular blood tests and every three months I have a hormone injection. Touch wood, fingers crossed everything is OK. Thanks to Rotherham General, Hallamshire, and Aston Medical Centre who have been very supportive.
Also I would like to mention the advice I have been given by Information services they have also been very supportive.
A final thanks to my wife June for making the phone call in the first place.
P.S. Cancer has no boundaries, I was a fit bloke looked after my health, if you are in any doubt you should see your doctor.
